What it's been like working with James May for 10 years

James May and his director, Tom Whitter, have been working together for over a decade now, putting together such shows as 'Man Lab', 'Cars Of The People' and 'Our Man In Japan'. So we thought we'd sit them both down and get them reminiscing about the good (and bad) times they've had filming together over the years.

  • “Back when James smoked” is iconic considering you can see him have a dart in the behind the scenes video on Lucy’s channel. And so we are clear no hate here, it’s hard to shake the habit especially if you grew up in the era where everyone was still smoking.

  • If anyone else finds this uncomfertably sped up - a custom playback speed of 0.85-0.9x is the sweet spot to make it sound normal.

  • Please, please, please, when making a Q&A, interviews and such, say the question out loud instead of just displaying it on the screen. I love James' face as much as the next guy, but it would be nice to be able to just listen to such interviews and it's quite impossible without actually hearing the questions being asked.

  • James and Tom carry on about the marginality of ManLab? I guess I'm in the minority of those who liked it and I learned how to use my watch as a compass, brilliant! Cars of the People was great especially when you touched on my "people car", the Capri. Really touched me personally. Toy Stories was great (still have my slot cars and trains). I learned about the Brooklands and I'm sorry to see it end. Now I have moved over to "The Assembler". And who produced the build-a-mini mini-series and was that Lucy's mini?

  • Why is your audio mix always so muddy? It's like your highs are way too low for the voices, I'm having to turn up the volume or wear headphones to understand what's being said. This is disregarding the James May tea spillage, it's always a bit hard to understand on the videos where you use lav mics.
